The ancient and sophisticated civilization of Persia, located at the crossroads of East and West, has bequeathed countless art treasures to the world and exerted a lasting influence on artistic styles and motifs from Europe to China and Japan. Glassware is no exception, although the very existence of ancient Persian glass was not confirmed until some twenty years ago. Previously, “Persian glass was assumed to include only works of the Islamic period, beginning in the seventh century A.D. Glass manufacturing in the ancient Middle East was thought to have been confined to Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Syrian region, from which it later spread throughout the Roman Empire.
The author of this book, the first general introduction to Persian glass from the early first millennium B.c. down into the Islamic period, is among the pioneering art historians and archaeologists who finally verified the existence of preIslamic glass actually made in Persia. He has participated in several archaeological expeditions that have yielded rich finds of ancient glass from tombs in the Iranian highlands.
Persian Glass discusses these and other important finds in terms of historical background and influences, the evolution of glassmaking techniques, art styles, designs and motifs, and the provenance of glass throughout Persian history, with major emphasis on the important Parthian and Sassanian dynasties (249 B.C.-A.D. 642). In a wider context, the author points out how the recent discovery in Iran of glass vessels almost identical to works preserved in Japan for more than a thousand years, as well as new finds in Japan of fragments that perfectly match examples of glass found in the Iranian highlands and known to date from the Partho-Sassanian period, have provided the first concrete evidence linking ancient Persia and Japan, thus underscoring the significance and scope of Persia's role in East-West cultural exchange via the Silk Road.
