Foreword Despite such an unfortunate event as the war of 1592, Korea maintained the good neighborly relations of peace and friendship towards Japan. The Korean Envoys were examples of such a relations. Indeed, Tongshinsa, the Korean word for the Envoys, meant emissaries of sincere trust.
Dispatches of Korean Envoys interrupted by the 1592 Japanese invasion resumed during the Tokugawa Shogunate. At the invitation of the Shogun, Korean Envoys visited Japan on such occasions as the succession of Shogun, birth of an heir to Shogun, and in celebration of peace. Each of the 12 Korean Envoys consisted of 300 to over 500 members. It was exceptional and noteworthy that Japan in the period of national isolation had formal relations with Korea. In addition to their diplomatic mission, the Korean Envoys played the role of the transmitter of Korean culture and objects to Japan. The present exhibition is to help deepen the understanding of the Korean Envoys through the paintings, calligraphic works, and other materials resulting form the broad cultural ex- changes between the members of the Korean missions and the Japanese during the Choson period (1392-1910). This exhibition has already been held in the Tokyo National Museum in October, 1985. This special exhibition realized with the support of the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) is the first joint project of the National Museum of Korea and the Tokyo National Museum, and we believe that the present exhibition is an epochal event in the cultural exchanges between Korea and Japan. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture and Information, and the Korean Embassy in Tokyo for their assistance, and to the organizations and individuals who have generously permitted us to include their valuable artefacts in the present exhibition.
